Luxembourg will vote on the Constitution - a brave decision
21.06.2005
Reacting to the news that a referendum on the European Constitution will indeed happen in Luxembourg 10th July, the Young European Federalists (JEF-Europe) commit to doing all they can to ensure a Yes vote.
"This is a very tough time to hold a referendum," stated Jon Worth, President of JEF-Europe. "Juncker's political gamble is a brave one."
"The EU looks battered and weary, and lacking leadership after a summit characterised by acrimony. It seems tough to win a referendum in such circumstances."
JEF-Europe has been in favour of the Constitution from the start, and will be mobilising as many pro-Europeans as possible to assist the Yes campaign in Luxembourg.
"We still believe in the institutional improvements that this Constitution brings," continued Jon Worth. "So it is vital that we continue to work for it."
"The reasons to be in favour of this Constitution are as strong as ever - it makes the EU more democratic, more efficient, and helps to set right the many wrongs that were seen at the EU summit last week."
"We must not loose sight of the goal of a democratic, open, accountable and federal EU that can really deliver for its citizens - a positive vote in Luxembourg would be a small step on the road to that goal."
