Renewed hope for the European Constitution - Luxembourg votes YES
The Young European Federalists (JEF-Europe) welcome the positive referendum result in Luxembourg, in which 56% of the voters supported the European Constitution.
"The positive result in Luxembourg is a very welcome result," stated Jon Worth, President of JEF-Europe.
"The citizens of Luxembourg have shown that - despite results elsewhere - that the European Constitution is still important to them."
"Luxembourg has benefitted enormously from European integration; today's vote seems to have confirmed that the citizens understand this."
JEF-Europe has been actively involved in the trans-national YES Campaign in favour of ratification of the European Constitution, and has stated its position that ratification of the European Constitution must continue. Members of JEF have been actively involved in the campaigns for YES on the streets of Luxembourg.
"This YES vote is a small step towards a Constitution for Europe," continued Jon Worth. "But we still have a very long way to go."
"The heads of state have committed themselves to a period of reflection about the Constitution. We urge them to make that a period of active engagement with citizens, not a period to put the Constitution in the political deep freeze."
"The case for the Constitution, and especially for the institutional reforms it embodies, are as vital as ever."
