We've just married East and West. So now it's time for a marriage contract!
The EU needs the Constitution before the European Parliament elections!
Following the completion of enlargement of the EU on May 1st, the Young European Federalists (JEF-Europe) appeal to the European Parliament, national parliaments and European leaders to adopt the European Constitution, as drafted by the Convention, before the European elections.
"The Enlargement of the EU is like a marriage of reason" stated Jon Worth, President of JEF-Europe.
"But on such an occasion, usually the partners sign in a contract to ensure successful cohabitation and a happy future for the whole family."
"The just enlarged EU 25 definitely needs such a wedding contract: the European Constitution!"
Recently the EU leaders have committed themselves to adopt the European Constitution at the European Council at the end of June. However, the first EP Elections in the Union of 25 will take place one week before.
"The Constitution needs to be adopted before the EP Elections", continued Jon Worth. "It would be a complete disrespect of the voters if the Constitution were to be adopted just after the election of the new European Parliament."
"How do you want people to take the Constitution - and the EP elections - seriously if they feel they are excluded of the main discussions about their own future?"
"It is every citizen's right to have the Constitution in hand before going to the polls. Further, the candidates for the EP Elections should also make clear for what kind of Europe they stand."
"Moving the European Council forward 2 weeks would be a sign of a growing awareness among the European leaders that voters matter more than bureaucrats horse-trading behind closed doors", concluded Jon Worth.
At the occasion of Europe Day, May 9th, the Young European Federalists will campaign all over Europe for the adoption of the European Constitution before the European elections. European citizens will be asked to sign the appeal "European Constitution Now!". It will also be sent to Members of the European parliament, of national parliaments and European leaders with a request for support. The appeal is available under :
