Euro 2004 - score a goal for democracy: VOTE!
The coming days are important for people in Europe in two ways: the European Parliament elections will help shape the future of the European Union, and Euro 2004 kicks off in Portugal.
"We urge all European citizens to spend 5 minutes going to the polling station before relaxing to watch football," explained Jon Worth, President of the Young European Federalists (JEF-Europe). "The European championships will give us a winner, the European elections have to do the same."
"When the skills of Henry or Beckham are a distant memory, the valuable work done by members of the European Parliament will just be starting. But only the best players will join their national teams in Portugal, we should make sure that the same happens at the Parliamentary elections!"
"What we need in the coming days is courage and determination from voters. The European Elections are the field where they can score!"
A recent poll(*) conducted by the European Youth Forum has highlighted how important Europe is to young people.
"Younger generations benefit more from the European Union than anyone else," continued Jon Worth. "It is therefore vital that young people register their opinions by going out to vote."
"This is a one of the few opportunities when European citizens can state clearly their vision of Europe. Every vote cast sends a message to the next European parliament. A stronger Parliament will be able to defend our interests more passionately."
Within the project Give Europe a Face - www.giveeuropeaface.net, JEF-Europe has organized more then 300 events around Europe where citizens had the chance to get in touch with Europe. A series of local activities is the basis for this long-term campaign to gather new ideas for Europe - to give it a new Face!
