Open Letter campaign: Leaders of Europe, it's Constitution time!
The Young European Federalists (JEF-Europe) together with its national sections urged the leaders of Europe to agree on the Constitution. An Open Letter has been sent out to all Heads of States and Governments ahead of today's European Council meeting.
"A common action is needed in order to make Europe's leaders move and to express unity of European youth," explained Jon Worth, President of JEF-Europe.
"The open letter states that the European Council meeting is a litmus test for the future of the European Union."
"The Convention method is far more legitimate than a closed IGC and Europe's leaders are thus urged to respect this and adopt the text unchanged."
"By adopting the Constitution, the leaders will prove that they understand the reasons for a low turnout at the recent elections," continued Jon Worth.
"People need a fresh Europe which is able to meet their demands. The message has been sent and we hope the leaders find enough courage to finish their work and put the Constitution in print!"
"After the Monday's European Parliament elections hangover, we hope for a more happy weekend!"

Text of the open letter
--------------------------
The European Council Summit in June will be a litmus test for the future of the European Union. The adoption of the text produced by the Convention after 2 years of consultation with representatives of European and national institutions, governments and Europe’s citizens is more than ever needed. The European Union of 25 is still seeking for the equilibrium among its member states. Our Union is unfortunately still lacking the capacity to mobilize its citizens behind a common vision for Europe. Hopefully the European Elections will not prove this once more.
The Union of today is lacking democracy, transparency, and the political courage of its national leaders!
However, at the Intergovernmental Conference in June the EU might embark on a new path. It represents a unique chance to re-unify the EU with its citizens, to bring the European affairs where they should always be - on top of the political agenda in all member states.
The Convention completed an epoch making task by drafting a Constitution for the European Union. Both the European Parliament and the European Commission expressed their approval of the text. The draft Constitution is the best achievable compromise for the time being. It represents the currently best solution for the institutional challenges the enlarged Union is facing.
It is high time for the member states’ governments to join the European institutions and commit themselves to a brighter future by adopting the first European Constitution. We therefore ask you to accept this draft without any changes and thereby to approve the Convention as a transparent and democratic method.
We call upon you to decide for the best of Europe’s citizens. Give Europe a new Face and support the draft Constitution!
Do not disappoint your citizens!
Do not disappoint Europe!
Jon Worth, President
